Marriages celebrated by Portuguese citizens abroad must be transcribed in Portugal to produce effects in the Portuguese legal system.
The transcription must be done at a Civil Registry Office – or at a Portuguese consulate abroad – upon presentation of the marriage certificate issued by the authorities of the country where the marriage took place. The respective birth certificate must also be presented in tin case the marriage was celebrated with a foreign citizen. If a prenuptial agreement has been granted, the request must be accompanied by a certified photocopy thereof.
In case of weddings held at a Portuguese consulate, the transcription will be made by the Consulate without the need to take any additional steps.
The transcription process has an associated cost of €120.00, to which will be added €30.00 in the event of a prenuptial agreement
